“When you connect to the heart of a child, everything is possible.”

- Dr. Karyn Purvis

Trust-Based Relational Intervention®

In February of 2018 we began exclusively utilizing a trauma informed care program developed at the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University called Trust-Based Relational Intervention®(TBRI). TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children.  TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors.

All of our employees receive TBRI® training as a component of their new-hire orientation as well as monthly refresher training. Each month, our campus selects a specific skill from TBRI® to focus on as a way of implementing these concepts into the fabric of our environment here at Sunny Glen. While the intervention is based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI® is connection.

Spiritual Development

Along with meeting the physical and emotional needs of each child, we provide the opportunity for spiritual development and growth.  Children benefit from learning about God and how God is their maker and God is love. If we can instill these precepts in their hearts early in life, our hope is that they develop a strong faith that will sustain them throughout the rest of their lives.  We have weekly church services on our campus to provide our children with the opportunity to worship God in spirit and truth and to be inspired by learning about the relationship that God desires to have with each of them.  Weekly bible studies are offered and we seek to foster an environment where our children can ask questions and grow in their knowledge of God and His Word.

The Poenisch Counseling Center

The Poenisch Counseling Center hosts our professional service level providers, interns, and contract providers. Therapeutic and case management services are provided to all our children in care. Children are able to visit with their case manager or therapist for continued services and support.

Case Managers – Case Managers support our children in care with various duties ranging from maintenance of a child’s record to community outreach and working with community members for adequate services.  Case managers offer their support under the direction of the Treatment Director and work in collaboration with our House Parents, Unit Managers and staff for a holistic approach in caring and treating the children in care.  We take much pride in our work and are diligent in providing premier services.

Interns – Sunny Glen hosts master’s degree, counseling interns and bachelor’s and master’s degree social work interns each semester to promote professional growth in our local community.  We are happy to announce we have established our intern network from the all throughout the RGV to San Antonio! Those interested can email damaris@sunnyglen.org with your letter of intent, resume and university information.  Due to limited availability, those chosen to proceed with the process must go through an interview, state background check, medical pre-requisites and orientation before beginning their hours.  Due to a high volume of applicants each semester, we run on a first come-first serve basis.  Check-in early each semester for availability!

Licensed Professional Counselors – LPCs offer counseling services for our children in care.  We have a strong network of community resources who provide treatment to meet the unique requirements of each child.  During peak seasons, there are times we need to look for external service providers.  If you are an LPC and would like to explore the opportunity to provide counseling services, please send your request to damaris@sunnyglen.org

Sunny Glen Children’s Home is here to provide a home for abused and neglected children. We seek to meet the physical, emotional, and most importantly spiritual needs of our children and to provide a safe place of refuge from the difficult and sometimes traumatic world.
